Cade (tar) is a variety of juniper native to regions of the Mediterranean. Cade oil is obtained through steam distillation and then rectified (purified). Raw, non-rectified cade oil contains the carcinogenic compound benzo[a]pyrene, which is safely removed during the rectification process.
Aromatically, rectified cade oil has a deep, smoky, woody, and slightly tar-like scent. It functions as a base note and can act as a fixative in fragrance blends.
